Integrated Equal Loudness Control

Music sounds correct at every volume. Bass doesn't disappear when you turn it down.

Human hearing is not flat. At lower volumes, we're less sensitive to bass and treble. This is described by the equal-loudness contours (Fletcher-Munson curves).

Most audio systems ignore this. Turn the volume down and the bass vanishes. The music sounds thin and lifeless at quiet levels.

The Baffless system includes integrated equal-loudness compensation tied to the volume control. As you reduce volume, bass and treble are gently boosted to match your ear's changing sensitivity.

This isn't a crude "loudness button." It's a carefully calibrated correction based on the actual equal-loudness curves, applied progressively with volume changes. The tonal balance stays consistent from whisper-quiet to full volume.

Why integration matters

Equal-loudness compensation cannot be one fixed filter: the required curve changes with playback level. The controller therefore needs a reliable estimate of the SPL at the listening position before it can choose how much correction to apply.

Baffless is designed as one complete playback system: the DSP volume control, amplifier gain, drivers and loudspeaker sensitivity are all known. Once the system is set up for its listening position, the DSP has a defined relationship between its volume setting and the expected sound-pressure level, so it can apply the appropriate equal-loudness correction automatically.

In a system assembled from separate source, preamplifier, power-amplifier and loudspeaker components, the volume setting alone does not reveal the listening SPL. The gain and sensitivity of each stage — as well as listening distance — may be unknown to the controller. Equivalent compensation is possible, but it requires separate measurement and calibration and may need to be redone when a component or gain setting changes. Controlling the complete signal chain lets Baffless make level-dependent correction an integrated feature rather than an add-on.
