About Music Listening

There is a lot of misunderstanding about audio quality. Follow the objective path and it starts to make sense β€” even though music perception itself is stubbornly subjective.

Different people hear different things. Some are more sensitive to a frequency, a texture, a small timing error. Hearing can also be trained: it is not a better ear so much as a different way of listening. A conductor can tell which violin in the section is a little off. That skill is learned.

The same playback, on the same system, can sound wonderful or dull depending on the listener's state. Relaxed, comfortable, hungry for music β€” perhaps with a glass of wine β€” and a record can sound fantastic. Stressed, tired, angry, in a hurry, and that same record on that same system can sound bad, or simply uninteresting.

Hearing is also suggestible. Studies show that people hear what they expect: if you already believe A is better than B, you will hear it that way even when it is not. That is not a moral failing. If the belief helps you enjoy the music, the goal is achieved β€” it is closer to a placebo than to a measurement. The useful part is to know it, and to keep the objective picture in view. A starting point: expectation changes what we hear (Tabas et al., eLife 2020).

Distortion is not one thing

Distortion in the playback chain can make music worse, or more pleasant. It depends on the distortion. Valve amplifiers are famous for the second case: their harmonic profile is often liked. They also have a high output impedance, which reduces the higher-order distortion generated in the loudspeaker driver itself β€” the same physical idea behind current drive. A vinyl record distorts much more than a digital one. The pressing can still carry more dynamic range than a modern digital master, because of the loudness war. And the ritual matters: putting a record on, and staying with it from start to end instead of skipping tracks, is a psychological benefit. You listen more.

The rest of the room

Listening also depends on reflections, loudspeaker directivity, room acoustics, and how stereo is constructed β€” including the artificial kind. None of these is simply good or bad. What matters is how you address them.

At a normal sofa the ear does not add energy like an SPL meter. Reflections arriving within a few tens of milliseconds fuse with the direct sound and add to how loud the speaker seems. The late tail is more space than volume. For perceived source loudness in a living room:

Those ranges are a working estimate for a typical home seat, not a split published in one paper. What is published: early reflections fuse with the direct sound and raise its effective level (Bradley 2009, reviewing Haas). The late tail does not. The standard energy mix used to predict the measured in-room curve is different again β€” 12% listening window, 44% early reflections, 44% sound power (CTA-2034-A, after Toole / Devantier).

Music is not just loudspeakers and amplifiers. It is the whole system: the speaker, the room, and the person in the chair. Most music lovers simply keep changing the components of that system until the experience feels satisfying. The variations are endless.

And my approach is…

Knowing all of the above, I do not treat the loudspeaker as a box that makes sound. It is one system: the driver, the room, psychoacoustics, and the psychology of the person sitting there. What leaves the loudspeaker still has to add as little as possible.

A chain with added distortion can sound better subjectively. That colour belongs with the musicians and the recording engineers, not with the loudspeaker. If you want to add some of it yourself, do it in the digital domain, where it is controlled, reversible and can simulate almost anything. An accurate system can impersonate an inaccurate one. The other way around does not work. That is my approach.
