Crosstalk Cancellation

Its strongest effect is a clearer, more focused central image — where vocals are usually placed.

With two loudspeakers, each ear hears both speakers. The left speaker also reaches the right ear, and the right speaker also reaches the left ear. These cross-ear paths are called acoustic crosstalk.

Crosstalk cancellation uses DSP to send carefully timed and frequency-shaped counter-signals from the speakers. At the listening position, this reduces how much of the left channel reaches the right ear and vice versa.

The strongest audible effect is in the central mono image. Lead vocals are usually mixed equally into the left and right channels, placing them in the center. With less crosstalk, that image becomes more focused, solid, and independent of the loudspeaker positions.

To develop this filter, a binaural measurement head was built. It is a tool, not a product.
